Handful of Dates.

The main character in the story is the narrator because he is describing an even that happened to him while he was a child. The forces that are at odds in the story is the grandfather and the man that owns land who's name is Masood. The narrator does not like his grandfather any more because of what he was doing to Masood. The word I chose that I didn't know what the meaning was is: date which means A sweet, dark brown, oval fruit containing a hard stone, often eaten dried.

2/22/13: Of Cannibals, Kings and Culture: The Problem of Ethnocentricity

The organization of the article I read was reverse chronological because they went from a king that was interrogating Colombian prisoners and then it went to talk about someone else that was a long time before the king he first talked about. The tone of the article was didactic this means that the author was trying to inform you about something, what he was trying to inform you about in this article was the idea of the problem of ethnocentrism. The article was about the way that we treat people and the way that we look at other peoples culture. What we consider taboo isn't considered that in other peoples culture and just because we aren't accustomed to something doesn't mean that we should disrespect people because they practice this. The points that show this in the article are: “accustomed to regard their own customs as by far the best.”  Since the Brazilians saw all human beings “as halves of one another… We all call barbarous anything that is contrary to our own habits. This blog could mean many different things to other people but what it meant to me was that all people should be treated equally and they should not judge them because of their customs.

The order of the article is in order by time, from most important to least important. The tone of the article is indifferent because he tells both sides of the story instead of what he just believes in. The article is about how people who watch TV are not lonely because they feel that the TV is their friend. The title is a supporting detail along with the first paragraph and the second sentence in the second paragraph.
